Why Your Technician Needs to Be NATE-Certified

As far as HVAC maintenance and repair goes, there’s possibly no greater qualification than a NATE certification. The North American Technician Excellence is a non-profit organization that offers the nation’s highest level of technical knowledge in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry. NATE certifications involve rigorous examinations that test applied knowledge of HVAC systems on real-world scenarios. In fact, having a NATE-certified professional handle your home’s HVAC troubles is as good as it gets.

A Brief History

Founded in 1997, NATE has set the bar in industry-wide standards for all HVAC maintenance and repair for more than 20 years. The certification qualifications are created by the NATE Technical Committee. The committee is comprised of experts in the HVAC industry and handles all examinations, knowledge areas, and development.

NATE Certification

A NATE certification does not require prior experience or formal technical education. The tests are designed to determine a candidate’s knowledge in applying HVAC maintenance and repair concepts in real-life situations. The Technical Committee develops the assessment based on years of task analysis from countless cases in the country.

While the application for the exam needs no prior training, it’s still highly recommended that some reasonable level of experience must be had. The questions are painstaking and all-encompassing, and it’s highly unlikely that a beginner will move to the final certification stages.

With an ever-developing industry, NATE certifications last for two years. Within these two years, a total of 16 hours of continuing education must be earned to continue, or you must re-take the exams to maintain certification.
